Riding Zoox in Austin
Zoox announced the step on Mar 24, 2026, putting its purpose-built robotaxis on Austin streets with employee riders. The service area is a high-demand ride-hailing zone south of central Austin, which Electrek described as a tiny portion of the city. No square-mile figure, airport access or freeway use has been published.
The rides cost nothing, and TechCrunch reported that Austin rides must stay free at this stage. Booking runs through the Zoox app, but only for the employee group. Zoox plans to let the public in later in 2026 through Zoox Explorers, the program that brings San Francisco riders off a waitlist for free trips, and no Austin sign-up date has been announced.
Two driverless services take Austin riders today. Waymo is booked through Uber and covers about 140 sq mi, with some freeway trips. Tesla Robotaxi uses Tesla's app, reports a larger area and also runs Cybercab rides. Paying members of the public can ride a Zoox in Las Vegas, where fixed stops line the Strip.
