About Zoox

Zoox runs a purpose-built robotaxi with four seats facing each other, each with its own seatbelt, airbags and touchscreen. Public, paid, fully driverless Zoox rides exist in one city, Las Vegas. Free public rides began on the Strip on Sep 10, 2025 with five stops, and Zoox started charging fares on Aug 10, 2026. Trips run between fixed destinations rather than to any address, from Resorts World and Fontainebleau at the north end to Mandalay Bay at the south, plus Harry Reid Airport since Sep 3, 2026.

Zoox names 12 cities in all. Besides Las Vegas, only San Francisco takes outside riders, through the Zoox Explorers program, which has given free driverless rides to invited waitlist members since Nov 18, 2025. Austin and Miami sit with the safety-driver cities because rides there go only to Zoox employees, family and friends. In the remaining eight, among them Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and San Diego, Zoox is testing and carries no public riders.

Zoox and Uber announced a partnership on Mar 11, 2026 that would put Zoox on Uber in Las Vegas in summer 2026 and in Los Angeles by mid-2027. The company's rider manual still describes the Zoox app as the way to book.

Booking and riding

Open the Zoox app, choose a destination, then walk to the designated pickup point. In Las Vegas a Concierge may help, and the app tells you when the vehicle has arrived. Doors open only on the curb side. Once they close, tap START RIDE on the rider screen, and the ride won't begin until everyone is seated with a belt on. Small items can go on an empty seat and suitcases on the floor in front of you. Foldable wheelchairs and walkers also go on the floor, which may reduce how many people fit. A Pull Over button stops the vehicle at the earliest safe point, and the Emergency Call Button above your head reaches Zoox Support (not 911). Support also takes calls and texts at 1-888-477-5055, including for lost items.

Zoox has not published a minimum age. TechCrunch described the 2025 launch as open to any adult, and the rider manual says children may ride with a parent or guardian who handles belts and boosters. In Las Vegas the fare is a base price plus distance and time, shown before booking, and it does not change if the route changes. Airport trips and big events at Sphere or T-Mobile Arena can add a destination fee. Casinos.com reported a first-day fare of $21.07 from ARIA to Fontainebleau. San Francisco Explorers ride free, since Zoox's CPUC pilot permits bar fares.

Recalls and investigations

Zoox has filed four software recalls with NHTSA. The first, 25E019000 (Mar 14, 2025), covered 258 vehicles that could brake hard unexpectedly. Recall 25E029000 (Apr 25, 2025) covered 270 vehicles that could mispredict a slowly approaching perpendicular vehicle, and the fix was in place by Apr 17, 2025. Recall 25E090000 (Dec 19, 2025) covered 332 vehicles that could cross the center line near intersections, fixed by Dec 29, 2025. The most recent, 26E044000 (Jul 10, 2026), covered 105 vehicles whose software could fail to detect heavy smoke, and the software was updated. The AutoWire reported that NHTSA granted Zoox a temporary exemption from federal motor vehicle safety standards through Jul 31, 2028, for up to 2,500 vehicles a year.
