About Waymo

Waymo runs in 32 cities, more than any other robotaxi operator. Riders book a car with nobody in the driver's seat and pay a fare much like any ride-hail trip. In March 2026 Waymo said it was giving 500,000 paid rides a week across 10 US cities.

Anyone can ride, with no sign-up list, in 13 metro areas: Phoenix (public driverless rides since Oct 8, 2020), the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, San Diego, Tampa and San Antonio. The last three opened to all on Oct 14, 2026. Two more let riders in from a waitlist, Las Vegas and Denver. Only Waymo employees ride in Detroit, as reported by ClickOnDetroit, so it sits with the safety-driver cities. Waymo is testing in 15 others, 13 in the US from Seattle to Washington, DC, plus London and Tokyo. New York City has an announcement but no rides, and its testing permit expired on Mar 31, 2026.

Most cities book through the Waymo app. Austin and Atlanta are different: Waymo rides there come only through the Uber app. Nashville has both, since Lyft riders in central Nashville can be matched with a Waymo from Sep 9, 2026. The Uber partnership in Phoenix ended on Jun 29, 2026. The Next Web reported that Waymo will launch its own app in Austin and Atlanta in Jan 2028, with the fleet staying on Uber through at least May 2028, though Waymo itself has not confirmed that.

Booking and riding

You need to be 18 or older to hold a standard account and ride alone. Teens aged 13 to 17 can ride on their own with a parent-linked teen account, but only in Metro Phoenix and Nashville. Up to four riders fit in a car, and the driver's seat stays empty. Children under 8 need a car seat, which you bring and fit in the back yourself. Service animals are welcome, while pets should stay home. Cars arrive locked, and you open yours from the app, then tap Start ride on the screen or in the app. Miss the waiting time the app shows and the trip cancels, and a no-show fee may apply. A first violation for smoking or vaping costs $100.

Waymo picks up at five airports: Phoenix Sky Harbor, San Jose, San Antonio, SFO and Nashville. At SFO and Nashville only a limited number of riders can use it so far. SFO riders board at the Rental Car Center or the Grand Hyatt rather than at terminal curbs, and the airport pickups page has the exact spots. A fare starts from a minimum price, adds distance and time, and can move with demand. You see an estimate before booking (more on the Waymo price page). Waymo Premier, an invite-only membership at $29.99 a month, pays at least 10% back in Waymo Cash and adds priority pickup and up to five waived cancellation fees a month for rides booked in the Waymo app.

Recalls and investigations

Three Waymo software recalls are on file with NHTSA. Recall 25E084000 (Dec 8, 2025) covered 3,067 vehicles that could pass a stopped school bus, and the software fix was already in place by Nov 17, 2025. Recall 26E026000 (May 1, 2026) covered 3,791 vehicles that could drive into standing water on higher-speed roads, after an incident in San Antonio on Apr 20, 2026. A month later came 26E035000 (Jun 13, 2026), covering 3,871 vehicles that could enter closed freeway construction zones, with a software update from Jun 16, 2026. Waymo had suspended freeway rides in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Miami on May 21, 2026 and began restoring them in Phoenix on Jul 29, 2026. Atlanta service stopped on May 20, 2026 when a car got stuck in floodwater and came back a week later, as reported by Atlanta News First. The safety page keeps the full log.
