About Wayve

Wayve's rides reach the public through Uber, not through a Wayve app. Its first public service started in London on Sep 3, 2026, when Uber riders began to be matched with Wayve cars. The initial fleet is 15 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, and Tech Times reported that TfL licensed up to 15 of them as private hire vehicles in August 2026.

London is one of two Wayve cities. Every ride there has a TfL-licensed private hire driver on board, and the service area is anywhere within London except the airports. The other city, Tokyo, has only been announced. On Mar 11, 2026, Wayve, Uber and Nissan said they plan a pilot there with Wayve-powered Nissan LEAF cars on the Uber network, targeted for late 2026, with a trained safety operator and subject to talks with authorities.

There are no driverless Wayve rides yet. In the UK, the Automated Passenger Services permit rules came into force on May 15, 2026, and any London permit needs DfT approval and TfL consent. The UK rules page explains how that framework works.

Booking and riding

You don't download a Wayve app. In London you open Uber and request UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort as usual. If a Wayve car is available nearby, you may be matched with it, and the Wayve release says this costs nothing extra. With a licensed driver in the driver's seat, the trip feels much like a normal private hire ride.

Plan airport trips some other way, because Wayve's London area excludes the airports, Heathrow among them. Uber's standard rules on age, luggage and pets for the product you request are the ones to check. When Tokyo opens, the Uber app is the expected route there too, and Japan's rules for driverless Level 4 permits are on the Japan page.

Recalls and investigations

Wayve has no recalls or investigations on record. Its entries cover licensing and launches: TfL's private hire licence for up to 15 vehicles (reported by Tech Times in August 2026), the supervised London launch on Uber on Sep 3, 2026, and the Tokyo pilot announcement of Mar 11, 2026. A licensed driver is on board for every London ride. Anything new will be logged on the safety page.
