About Tesla Robotaxi

Tesla Robotaxi is Tesla's ride-hailing service, booked in the Tesla Robotaxi app and run mostly with Model Y cars. It began in Austin on Jun 22, 2025 as an invite-only service with a safety monitor in the front passenger seat and a flat $4.20 fare. Some Austin cars have run with no monitor since Jan 22, 2026, while others still carry one. On Sep 3, 2026 Tesla added Cybercab rides in Austin, in a two-seat vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals (see Cybercab).

Driverless rides now run in six cities: Austin, Dallas and Houston (both from Apr 18, 2026), Miami (Jul 3, 2026), and Orlando and Tampa (Jul 21, 2026). Launch videos in Dallas, Houston and Miami showed nobody in the front seats, though Tesla has not said whether every car in those fleets is unsupervised. A human drives every ride in the Bay Area, where Tesla holds a California charter-party permit rather than an autonomous vehicle permit. Las Vegas and Phoenix have been announced.

Axios reported a July 2026 permit in Las Vegas for 10 robotaxis on the Strip corridor, and TechCrunch reported that Nevada later approved up to 5,000 vehicles in Clark County over 12 months. No public rides there are confirmed as of Oct 13, 2026.

Booking and riding

Tesla's rider rules set the age floor at 18 to book a ride or to ride alone, and nobody can book for someone else. Riders aged 8 to 17 may ride in a Model Y with an adult. The Cybercab takes riders 13 and up, again with an adult, and children under 8 cannot ride. A Model Y carries up to four passengers, none in the front-left seat, while a Cybercab carries two. Where the law requires a car or booster seat, bring and install your own. TechCrunch reported the Cybercab has no LATCH anchors. Service animals are allowed for riders with disabilities, and other animals stay home. Riding in the trunk is prohibited, and lost items go through a form in the app.

Tesla Robotaxi does not pick up at any airport. Not a Tesla App reported that Miami International sits inside the zone without terminal access, and Tesla Oracle reported that the Orlando zone runs near the airport but stops short of it. Austin fares rose on Mar 7, 2026, when the base went from $1 to $3.25 plus $1 a mile. For a side-by-side look, see Waymo vs Tesla Robotaxi.

Recalls and investigations

No Tesla Robotaxi recall is on record, but federal regulators have opened several reviews. TechCrunch reported that NHTSA opened audit query AQ26002 on Sep 4, 2026 into how Tesla self-certified the Cybercab to federal safety standards. According to electrive, NHTSA issued a Special Order on Sep 10, 2026 with answers due Sep 30, 2026, and fines of up to $139M for incomplete answers. On Oct 9, 2026, NHTSA opened defect petition review DP26010 into claims that about 1,000 MY2026 Model Y and Cybercab robotaxis speed in active school zones, as reported by Tesla North. In Texas, TxDMV shows 45 Cybercabs authorized for driverless operation.
