Riding Tesla in Tampa
The zone follows the Nebraska Ave (US 41 Business) corridor north of Downtown and Hyde Park, taking in West Tampa, Tampa Heights and parts of Seminole Heights and Riverside Heights. Tesla puts it at 23.6 sq mi, and a trace of the map lands at 23.8. There's no airport in it and no reported freeway use, so it works best for hops between the central neighborhoods.
Bookings happen only in the Tesla Robotaxi app, not on Uber or Lyft, and Tesla Oracle reported no safety personnel in the vehicle. The account holder must be 18 and can't book for someone else. Riders aged 8 to 17 can come along in a Model Y if an adult is aboard, children under 8 can't ride, and a car takes up to four passengers with nobody in the front-left seat. Bring and install your own car seat or booster where the law requires one, leave pets other than service animals at home, and file a Lost Item Report in the app if you leave something behind.
Tesla reached Tampa before Waymo, launching the same day as Orlando, and nobody has to wait for an invitation. Waymo in Tampa opened to everyone on Oct 14, 2026 and covers about twice the area. Nationally, NHTSA opened defect petition review DP26010 on Oct 9, 2026 into claims that MY2026 Model Y and Cybercab robotaxis speed in active school zones, as Tesla North reported. Florida law allows fully autonomous cars with or without a human aboard, and Florida rules has more.
