Riding Waymo in Seattle
On Sep 2, 2025, Waymo said Seattle service was 'on the way', as the Colorado Sun reported in a story that also covered Denver, and the city still sits under 'Up Next' on Waymo's updates page. GeekWire reported in Aug 2026 that Waymo's Ojai vehicle had been spotted in Seattle as part of the test fleet. The cars are on local streets, even though no one can hail them.
State law is what's holding it up. SB 6243 would have created a path for driverless paid rides in Washington, but GeekWire reported that it failed to pass out of committee during the 2026 legislative session. Without it, Waymo can test and can't sell trips. Seattle has no service area, airport plan, freeway plan or booking channel, and Waymo hasn't given a new date.
Zoox is also testing in Seattle without riders (see Zoox in Seattle). Compare Denver, where Waymo has admitted public riders from a list since Sep 1, 2026. The open Waymo services on the West Coast are in the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
