What's happening in Seattle
Waymo said in September 2025 that Seattle service was on the way, as the Colorado Sun reported on Sep 2, 2025. Its cars have tested here with human drivers since. GeekWire reported on Aug 7, 2026 that Waymo's newer Ojai vehicle had joined the Seattle test fleet.
Washington State has no framework for paid driverless rides. A bill, SB 6243, failed to pass out of committee during the 2026 legislative session, GeekWire reported. That leaves Waymo with no legal route to charge riders here, and it has given no launch date beyond calling Seattle "Up Next."
Zoox has a smaller presence. Electrek reported Seattle as one of Zoox's earlier testing expansions, though Zoox itself has not confirmed details, and there are no riders. For a public ride, the nearest city is the San Francisco Bay Area, where both Waymo and Zoox carry passengers. Portland, to the south, is testing only.
