Riding Waymo in San Diego
The map reaches from the coast inland to about I-15, and from Sunset Cliffs to Normal Heights. Downtown and Mission Bay are inside, but little lies north of I-8, so it suits trips between the beaches, Downtown and the older central neighborhoods. Traced from Waymo's own map, it measures about 45.6 sq mi, with the Mission Bay water drawn in as Waymo draws it.
Booking is in the Waymo app, open to anyone since Oct 14, 2026. Riders must be 18 to ride alone, and teen accounts aren't offered here. Visitors should know that San Diego International Airport wasn't part of the launch and freeway rides haven't started, though Axios San Diego reported Waymo plans both 'in the coming months'. Until then, airport trips need another kind of ride.
Waymo is the only robotaxi a San Diegan can book, since Zoox, which announced testing here around Sep 1, 2026, is still mapping by hand and takes no riders. TechCrunch reported in Nov 2025 that San Diego was on Waymo's list, and on Jul 8, 2026 Waymo said employee-only rides would start soon. In California, Waymo holds the Driverless Deployment permit that allows fares (see California rules). Los Angeles is the nearby Waymo city with no list.
