Where the cars go
Waymo's San Diego map covers 50 sq mi between the ocean and I-15. It runs from Logan Heights in the south up to Pacific Beach, and from Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach east to North Park and Normal Heights. Downtown and Mission Bay are inside (Waymo's map counts the bay's water), but very little lies north of I-8.
San Diego International Airport was not included at launch. Axios San Diego reported that Waymo plans to add it 'in the coming months', with highway rides planned on the same timeline. Until then, trips stay on city streets.
What to know in San Diego
San Diego is open to everyone with the Waymo app. TechCrunch reported in Nov 2025 that Waymo would launch here alongside Detroit and Las Vegas. On Jul 8, 2026 Waymo said employee-only rides would start soon, on Sep 1, 2026 it welcomed its first public riders, and on Oct 14, 2026 it dropped the waitlist. Teen accounts are not offered, so riders must be 18 to ride alone.
Zoox is next in line. It announced testing in San Diego around Sep 1, 2026 with a retrofitted fleet, starting with manual mapping before autonomous testing. It has no riders yet. A Sept 2026 trade article frames freeway operation as a future step for Zoox, citing its San Diego testing. California's permit system, laid out in the California rules, covers both companies.
