What to know in Phoenix

This is where Waymo's public driverless rides began. On Oct 8, 2020, Waymo opened fully driverless rides to existing Waymo One riders in Metro Phoenix and added more of the public over the following weeks. Phoenix also got teen accounts first, on Jul 8, 2025, for ages 14 to 17, and they now cover ages 13 to 17 with a parent-linked account. TechCrunch reported that the Uber partnership ended in July 2026, so the Waymo app is the only way to book here.

Waymo suspended freeway rides in four cities, Phoenix among them, on May 21, 2026 over construction-zone behavior. The NHTSA recall record (26E035000) says Waymo resumed freeway operations on Jun 25, 2026, likely without riders. Public freeway rides returned on Jul 29, 2026. Zoox is testing with a Phoenix depot and a Scottsdale center (reported by Electrek), and Tesla lists Phoenix as 'preparations underway'. See the Arizona rules.
