Riding Zoox in San Diego

San Diego and Houston joined Zoox's testing program at the same moment, according to ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle International. The work goes in order: a retrofitted test fleet is driven manually to build maps, and autonomous testing follows. Zoox hasn't published a service area, airport plan or launch date for San Diego. Once riders are let in, bookings would go through the Zoox app as they do in its other cities.

San Francisco offers a preview of how a California launch might look. Zoox runs there on CPUC pilot permits that don't allow fares, so invited Explorers in San Francisco ride free. Its only public paid service is in Las Vegas, open since Aug 10, 2026 between fixed pickup and drop-off points on and near the Strip and bookable in the Zoox app or Uber. Airport pickups there are on Level Zero of the parking garage at Terminals 1 and 3.

Today the robotaxi you can book in San Diego is Waymo, which began public rides on Sep 1, 2026 and opened to everyone on Oct 14, 2026. When Zoox moves from mapping to autonomous testing or names a rider date, the change will show on the tracker and the Zoox operator page.

Charging fares in California would take more than the pilot permits Zoox holds today, as the California rules page explains. Waymo already holds the Driverless Deployment permit that allows paid rides, which is the permit behind its San Diego service.
