Riding Zoox in San Francisco Bay Area
Explorers book in the Zoox app and pay nothing, and that isn't a promotion. Zoox holds Drivered and Driverless Pilot permits in California, which don't allow fares, so riders travel free in exchange for feedback. The doors open only on the curb side. Inside are four facing seats, each with its own seatbelt, airbags and touchscreen, and the car stays put until everyone is seated and buckled and someone taps START RIDE.
At launch the zone covered most of SoMa, the Mission and the Design District, roughly 3.5 sq mi when traced from Zoox's map and a small fraction of Waymo's Bay Area map. On Mar 24, 2026, Zoox announced about four times that area across the eastern half of the city, reaching the Marina, North Beach, Chinatown, Pacific Heights and the Embarcadero. It hasn't confirmed whether Explorers can use the bigger map yet. No airport is served, and published sources say nothing about freeways.
Waymo in San Francisco takes anyone and charges fares, while Zoox picks riders from a list and covers far less ground. Paid Zoox rides do exist in Las Vegas, where public driverless service on and near the Strip began Aug 10, 2026, after TechCrunch reported on Jul 30, 2026 that Zoox had cleared its final federal hurdle for a paid service. Zoox vs Waymo sets the two side by side.
