What's happening in Detroit
Waymo cars are driving themselves in Detroit, but the only people riding in them work for Waymo. WDIV ClickOnDetroit reported that fully autonomous driving began on Oct 6, 2026, with rides limited to employees. Waymo has not confirmed a date for the public, and its updates page still lists Detroit as "Up Next."
The plan goes back to Nov 3, 2025, when TechCrunch reported that Waymo would launch robotaxi service in Detroit, Las Vegas and San Diego. The other two have since moved ahead. Waymo in San Diego is open to everyone, and Las Vegas admits riders from a waitlist. Detroit is still at the employee stage. Because the public can't ride yet, it sits with the safety-driver services rather than the driverless ones.
Michigan has set no date or condition for public service, so there is nothing firm to count down to. Anyone who wants to try a robotaxi before Detroit opens will find the nearest public service in Nashville, where Waymo runs in the central city through Lyft and its own app. Atlanta is the next closest.
