Riding Zoox in Houston

Zoox announced testing here and in San Diego at about the start of September 2026, which makes Houston one of its newest cities. ADAS and Autonomous Vehicle International reported that Zoox will begin by focusing on manual mapping before progressing to autonomous testing, using a retrofitted test fleet. The vehicles are on public roads without passengers, and no area, rider date or airport plan has been published.

Manual mapping means people drive the test cars to build maps, and autonomous testing follows. In Zoox's other cities, employee rides came next, then a free public waitlist, then paid rides. Austin and Miami are at the employee stage, San Francisco runs the free Zoox Explorers waitlist, and Las Vegas is the one city with paid public service, booked in the Zoox app.

Two operators carry Houston riders. Waymo covers nearly 50 sq mi of central Houston, including Downtown, Montrose, EaDo, the Texas Medical Center and NRG Stadium, in the Waymo app, while Tesla Robotaxi runs a 25 sq mi triangle in the northwest around Jersey Village. A fourth service, from Uber, Nuro and Lucid, is announced for mid-2027. The Houston page compares them.

The cars on Houston roads today are retrofitted test vehicles. In Las Vegas and San Francisco, riders get Zoox's purpose-built robotaxi, which has no steering wheel and seats that face each other, so the vehicle a Houston rider might eventually book is not the one being driven around for mapping now.
