Riding Avride in Dallas

Uber's launch post says an on-board specialist will be monitoring behind the wheel, so the car is never empty. The vehicles are Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxis, working an area of about 9 sq mi across Downtown, Uptown, Turtle Creek and Deep Ellum. A rough outline keeps it inside the I-30, I-35E and I-345 loop downtown, then pushes north through Uptown and Turtle Creek to about Lemmon Ave.

There's no Avride app. Request UberX, Uber Comfort or Comfort Electric, and Uber may match the trip to an Avride vehicle at no additional cost. No published source lists airport service, freeway use or a minimum age beyond Uber's own account rules. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation of Avride in May 2026 after 16 crashes, and TechCrunch reported on May 8, 2026 that most were in Dallas, though CBS Austin described them as spread across Dallas and Austin (the safety page has the full record).

Avride is the smallest Dallas service taking riders. Waymo runs about 50 sq mi in its own app with nobody aboard, and Tesla Robotaxi covers about 31 sq mi through the Tesla app, also without a driver. Avride is the only Dallas robotaxi reached through Uber, so a regular UberX request downtown can land you in one without your choosing it.
