What's happening in Grand Rapids

This page is about Grand Rapids in northern Minnesota, not the larger city in Michigan. Here May Mobility powers goMARTI, a free, on-demand service covering the Grand Rapids area and the neighboring Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation. The service grew in December 2025 under the name goMARTI 2.0, according to NPR's report carried by WFAE, and May Mobility's Sep 16, 2026 press release still lists Grand Rapids among its autonomous ride services.

Members of the public can ride, and it costs nothing. What riders won't get is an empty driver's seat. Minnesota law requires a licensed human driver to help operate the vehicles, so one is on board each trip, the same rule that shapes May Mobility's other Minnesota service in Eden Prairie.

goMARTI is a rural transit project, a different model from city robotaxis that circle a downtown. The booking app isn't named in the sources, so check with goMARTI directly before planning a trip. Waymo is testing well to the south in Minneapolis, with no public riders. The nearest fully driverless option is in Denver, where Waymo admits riders from a waitlist.
