What's happening in Hamburg

Only selected Hamburg residents can ride. MOIA, Volkswagen's ride-pooling company, started a passenger test operation here on Jul 15, 2026. The pilot is free and limited to residents who registered in advance. It uses up to ten ID. Buzz AD vehicles, and a trained safety operator is aboard each one.

Rides are booked in the MOIA app. The pilot zone covers parts of Winterhude, Barmbek and Wandsbek. There is no Uber option in Hamburg, and visitors cannot join the pilot as it is set up today. No date has been published for a wider opening, and MOIA has not said when the safety operators might step out.

MOIA is testing in the US too. In Los Angeles its booking channel is the Uber app, and the cars carry no public riders yet. Compared with US cities that already have public driverless service, Hamburg is at an early stage, with real passengers who were invited and a person on board. Hamburg is the only German city where a robotaxi has carried passengers so far. The pilot zone in Winterhude, Barmbek and Wandsbek sits north and east of the city center, so a visitor staying downtown would be outside it even if the pilot opened up.
