What's happening in Madrid
Madrid has no public robotaxi rides. On Sep 10, 2026, Spain issued its first national Level 4 permit, to WeRide, Uber and Avomo. It covers 20 supervised vehicles with a specialist in the car, so the city is at the testing stage.
Commercial rides on Uber, still with safety drivers, are targeted by the end of 2026. In June 2026 Zag Daily reported that fare-charging operations in Madrid and Zurich would launch around December with safety drivers behind the wheel, and that WeRide hopes to run fully driverless trips with Uber in both cities by mid-2027. A WeRide executive told the same outlet that fares should be comparable to a regular Uber.
The permit covers high-demand areas of Greater Madrid, and no street map has been released. Once rides open, booking will be in the Uber app. Today, the closest supervised Uber robotaxi in Europe is in Zagreb. Riding WeRide with nobody at the wheel means a trip to Abu Dhabi or Dubai. In the US, Waymo already runs driverless trips through Uber in Austin, which is roughly the setup Madrid is working toward.
