Riding Motional in Las Vegas
The IONIQ 5 robotaxis drive themselves, but a vehicle operator sits behind the wheel, and TechCrunch's Aug 1, 2026 tracker noted that human safety monitors are still riding along. Motional expects fully driverless rides by the end of 2026, a target nobody has confirmed.
Pickups use rideshare zones rather than open curbs, at Resorts World and Encore on Las Vegas Blvd, Westgate, curbside Downtown Las Vegas, and Town Square. There is no Motional app. Request UberX, Uber Electric, Uber Comfort or Comfort Electric, and Uber may match you to a Motional car at no additional cost. Harry Reid airport is not part of the service (Motional only describes Town Square as near the airport), and no source covers freeways or age limits beyond Uber's account rules.
Zoox is the Las Vegas service open to anyone with no operator aboard, running between fixed stops in its own app and serving both airport terminals. Waymo also runs empty cars but admits riders gradually from a waitlist into a 24 sq mi zone. Motional needs no new app and no waitlist, and it is the only one of the three with Downtown Las Vegas pickups. Tesla has a state permit and no public riders, and Nevada rules explains the framework.
