Where the cars go

Waymo opened Miami with about 60 sq mi across the Design District, Wynwood, Brickell and Coral Gables. An April 2026 expansion crossed the water to Miami Beach (and Bal Harbour, per Hoodline). Waymo's own map now runs from West Miami, Coral Gables and South Miami up through Downtown to Miami Gardens and North Miami Beach. Its published 150 sq mi figure appears to count Biscayne Bay, which the map fills in.

Tesla works the west side instead: West Miami, Doral, Sweetwater and Coral Gables, east to about LeJeune Rd and south across US-41. Not a Tesla App put the first geofence at roughly 20 square miles. Downtown and Miami Beach are outside it. Zoox's employee rides stay in a waterside area, which Futurride names as Edgewater and Beverly Terrace.

What to know in Miami

Waymo's highway trips on I-95, the Dolphin (SR 836) and the Palmetto (SR 826) began here on Apr 15, 2026 for an early-access list, then stopped when Waymo suspended freeway rides on May 21, 2026. Reports from Sept 2026 cite Miami freeway miles, though no restart date has been published. Waymo began rolling invites on Jan 22, 2026 and opened to everyone on Apr 15, 2026.

Tesla launched on Jul 3, 2026. A rider video showed no driver or monitor, but Tesla did not say whether every Miami car is unsupervised. Miami International Airport is a gap for everyone: Waymo says it plans to add MIA 'soon', and Tesla's zone wraps around the airport with no terminal pickups authorized, according to Not a Tesla App. Florida law allows driverless operation, as the Florida rules page explains.
