About Nuro and Lucid

Nuro and Lucid are building a premium robotaxi service with Uber. The vehicle is the Lucid Gravity, and rides are booked through the Uber app. Because the partners launch as one service, they share one page.

Since Apr 13, 2026, Uber employees in the San Francisco Bay Area have been riding Lucid Gravity robotaxis with safety drivers on board. A public launch was promised for later in 2026, but it had not been confirmed as of Oct 13, 2026. Houston is the second city. On Jun 17, 2026, Uber, Nuro and Lucid said they expect to launch there in mid-2027.

No member of the public can book one of these cars yet. Anyone who wants a robotaxi ride in either city today has options: Waymo is open to anyone in the Bay Area, and Waymo and Tesla Robotaxi both run in Houston.

Booking and riding

When the service opens, booking is expected to happen in the Uber app, the channel named in every announcement. Until then only Uber employees in the Bay Area can ride, and there is nothing for the public to download or sign up for. No fare, age rule, luggage rule or airport plan has been published.

On the Bay Area test rides, an operator is on board and only employees or invited riders can ride. California runs a separate permit system for autonomous vehicles, and the California rules page explains how it works for other operators. In Texas, commercial automated vehicles need a TxDMV authorization, covered on the Texas page.

Recalls and investigations

Nuro and Lucid have no recalls or regulator investigations on record. The two logged events are Uber employee test rides with safety drivers in the Bay Area from Apr 13, 2026, and the Houston plan announced on Jun 17, 2026. Every test ride to date has carried a safety driver. If a recall or investigation turns up, the safety page will add it.
